It's a paradigm shift, for sure. Service industries have been training us to use "sir" and "m'am" for generations (and if you are unsure, default to "sir"). Even progressive companies are afraid to give it up. Why not just drop it altogether? A simple "Welcome, how can I help you?" is just as friendly.
