I think the media magnifies de-transitioners. It's not as common as they would have you believe. But nevertheless, it doesn't convince me that being trans is becoming too "trendy." The key point to me is to honor the inherent dignity of each individual and their truth. Medical providers do not just hand out hormones willy nilly. People who express an interest in transitioning go through a process to ensure that they are on the path they want to be on. But even so, for some people, their authentic path will involve some going back and forth. I believe the times where someone felt coerced to transition when they didn't really want to are quite rare and may involve other complications like mental illness. I think it is just as important for the trans community to extend acceptance when someone de-transitions as it is for the cisgender mainstream to accept trans folks.
