I remember ACT-UP and the involuntary outings of queer folks committed in the name of “silence equals death”. I was in my 20s and I questioned the ethics of such actions. While I completely understood Harvey Milk’s point and I did my part to be outspoken, my gut told me it wasn’t fair to make that decision for someone else. An older woman who was a mentor of mine told me at the time “it takes all types” meaning the revolution happens from above, below, within and without. I never forgot that and it has held true on many fronts. We each have a role to play from within our own truth.
